Announcing
a
January offering for the
Joseph Campbell Roundtable:
The Fundamentalist Mind:
How Polarized Thinking Imperils Us All
Booksigning and Lecture with Discussion
Dr. Stephen Larsen
2-5 PM
Sunday, January 20, 2008
at the Center for Symbolic Studies 310 River Rd Ext. New Paltz, NY
This is the follow up-to last year’s very participatory meeting and brainstorming session during the writing phase of the book. A year has passed and it is now published: (Quest Books, Dec 2007), and can be seen at Amazon.com, or ordered locally through Mirabai bookstore.
The lecture moves from Joseph Campbell’s prophecy about “the clash of the fundamentalisms” to looking at how our brain participates in fundamentalist, literalistic or dualistic thinking, to how these principles are exploited by certain unscrupulous religious movements and personalities. The fragmentation of the image of God parallels the contemporary fragmentation in the psyche.
Though the fundamentalist world is polarized, black and white, we conclude the presentation with suggestions for the humbling task of dealing with the fundamentalist within ourselves. Awaiting us all is a more natural religiosity, and a sense of harmony with nature, sustainability and spiritual growth without guilt, coercion or bombast! We conclude with a revisioning of spirituality for our time.
Light refreshment and good fellowship.
